Orchid Oil for hair: what it is, what it does, which one to use

Why an orchid?
It started with Leonardo’s love of orchids. He grew them for their form and their symmetry, and one day, years into his career behind the chair, he looked at them differently: at the shine and the delicate, touchable softness of every petal, and wondered whether the oil inside the flower could give hair the same qualities. That question became REDAVID Orchid Oil, and the Treatment built on it is still the product our salons reorder most.
Orchids are the largest family of flowering plants on the planet, found on every continent except Antarctica, and the reason they last, keep their colour and adapt to almost any climate sits in the composition of the oil inside the plant. That is the material our formulators harnessed.
What is orchid oil?
Cymbidium orchids grow with their stems and flowers exposed to full sun, drying wind and heavy rain, and they keep their petals glossy through all of it. The plant manages that with its own antioxidant pigments (orchicyanin I, orchicyanin II and cyanin) and with a moisture system that holds water in on dry days and sheds it on wet ones.
REDAVID Orchid Oil is that extract, harvested from the stems and flowers with a gentle infusion process, and blended into a carrier light enough to absorb into hair instead of sitting on it. We patented the complex, and it is in every product that carries the Orchid Oil name.
What does orchid oil do for hair?
Hair that has been coloured, bleached, straightened or heat styled has the same problem in every case: the cuticle is lifted, the strand loses moisture faster than it should, and the structure underneath has been attacked by free radicals released during the process. Frizz, dullness and breakage all follow from that.
Orchid Oil goes after both halves. In clinical testing the complex was found to act as an external moisture balancer, with both water-loving and water-repelling properties, so it helps dry hair hold water and stops humid air from over-swelling the strand. That is why it controls frizz in high humidity without weighing hair down. The same testing found that its pigments scavenge up to four times more free radicals than vitamin E and vitamin C, which is the repair half: fewer free radicals, less ongoing damage to the strand.
The visible result is hair that is smoother, because the extract helps fill in the cracks and imperfections along the cuticle, and shinier, because a smooth surface reflects light. Is orchid oil a hair oil or a hair serum?
Both words describe the same thing here, and it helps to know what is in the bottle. The Orchid Oil Treatment is the orchid extract in a base of lightweight silicones (cyclomethicone, dimethiconol, cyclopentasiloxane) with caprylic/capric triglyceride, a coconut-derived emollient. The silicones are what give the slip, the heat shield and the instant shine, and they are the reason the product absorbs in seconds and never feels oily. The orchid complex is what keeps working after the shine: the moisture balancing and the free-radical scavenging happen in the strand, not on top of it.
If you have used a hair oil that felt greasy and needed a clarifying wash, that was a heavy plant oil sitting on the surface. If you have used a serum that shone on day one and did nothing for the hair underneath, that was a silicone with nothing in it. Orchid Oil is built to be neither.

How do I use orchid oil on hair?
- Start with two drops. Put them in one palm, rub your hands together until the product disappears, then glide your hands over the mid-lengths and ends. Keep it off the scalp; the scalp makes its own oil.
- On damp hair, before blow drying or diffusing. This is where the heat protection and the faster blow-out come from. Comb through once so the product reaches every section.
- On dry hair, one drop to finish. Smooth it over the surface for shine and to close down any frizz that has lifted during the day.
- Fine hair: one drop, ends only. Coarse or coily hair: three to four drops, in sections, and build up rather than starting heavy.
- Before heat tools on dry hair, one drop through the sections you are about to iron. Let it absorb for a minute first.
How often should I use it?
Daily is fine. The Treatment is designed as a leave-in for every wash and every styling session, and because the carrier is light it does not build up between washes. If the hair starts to feel coated, you are using too much, not too often: go back to two drops.
Does orchid oil help damaged hair?
It helps in two ways, and it is worth being clear about what it does not do. No product re-attaches a broken strand; once hair has split, the only fix is a haircut. What Orchid Oil does is stop the damage from getting worse (fewer free radicals attacking the strand) and put the moisture back that damaged hair cannot hold on its own. Used daily on colour-treated hair, that is the difference between hair that stays soft between salon visits and hair that turns to straw by week three. For hair that is past that point, start with the Dual Therapy Treatment, which adds a Repair step with hydrolyzed yeast protein and coconut oil to the Shine step, and move to the Treatment once the hair holds moisture again.
